During its heydey in 1915, the Cushing, Oklahoma field produced 305,000 barrels of oil daily. Storage facilities for such prodigious production were inadequate and large ponds were dug for storage. This lake of oil is an example of such a reservoir. The loss from evaporation alone must have been terrific. Today some 15 million barrels of tankage are found in the Cushing area.
