The first phase of widening I-44 to six lanes in Tulsa is complete. Work began on the section, which runs from the I-244 interchange east of Admiral Place to the Mingo Valley Expressway, in the fall of 1990 and was completed in the fall of 1992. The westbound lanes, foreground, were rebuilt first, followed by the eastbound lanes. The two outside westbound lanes carried two-way traffic while the eastbound lanes were rebuilt, which explains why they are darker than the adjacent sections. Several small retaining walls were built for the new roadway. The project included replacing eight bridges and widening 129th East Avenue and Garnett Road at their respective interchanges.
