The I-44 bridges over 31st Street, shown looking west on 31st Street, were widened and redecked in 1980 to improve safety and provide a safer driving surface. To accomplish the widening, a column was poured adjacent to each pier on the bridge's outer side, and the concrete abutment walls also were extended. A steel girder was installed on the new columns and then incorporated into the bridge through the redecking process. The old steel/concrete railings, which had been hit quite a few times over the years, were replaced with solid concrete railings. These bridges eventually will be replaced when I-44 is widened through the area. Photograph taken July 1988.
