The I-44 bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad was replaced (along with the Sheridan Road bridge) in 1999-2000, which eliminated another bridge from the I-44 project in Tulsa. The original Union Pacific Railroad bridges were among eight bridges that were widened and redecked in 1980 and were, along with the Sheridan Road bridge, the last of these bridges to be replaced. Construction began in early 1999 with the outer portions of the bridge being built first. Traffic then was switched to these sections, and the old bridges were demolished and replaced with the remainder of the new span. Unlike its predecessor, which was three spans, the new bridge is two spans. The project, which included widening I-44 to six lanes between the Sheridan Road and Union Pacific Railroad bridges and repaving the side streets around the railroad bridge, was completed in 2000.
