The Lewis Avenue area of I-44, shown looking west, will be one of the more challenging sections to widen, as the interstate passes through a mini-tunnel at the bridge. Excessive dirt work likely will be required to expand the highway in this area, as there isn't much room with the present alignment. There also is no eastbound frontage road at this location, as 51st Street is located just south of the highway. The westbound frontage road is to the right of the picture. This section of I-44 will be the last portion to be widened between the Arkansas River and the I-244 east interchange. Photograph taken April 27, 1989.
