Until the summer of 1979, the Cherokee Expressway ended at Apache Street, and the portion near downtown Tulsa was a spur that ended at Independence Street (bridge in foreground). The expressway, shown looking north from Archer Street, carries U.S. 75 from Tulsa to Bartlesville and is six lanes from I-244 to Peoria Avenue, at which point it becomes four lanes until it narrows to two lanes north of Mohawk Boulevard. Construction is under way on different segments to make the highway four lanes from Tulsa to Bartlesville. This photograph was taken March 1, 1987.
