U.S. Highway 66, which once ran from Santa Monica, Calif., to Chicago, is becoming extinct. Within the past two weeks, crews have been removing the U.S. 66 signs across Tulsa. This sign, located on U.S. 66/S.H. 33 just west of the Turner Turnpike gate, still stands, but it likely will be removed in the near future. In Oklahoma, the highway was replaced by Interstate 40 between Texas and Oklahoma City and Interstate 44 between Oklahoma City and Missouri. According to reports, the section of highway in Oklahoma from El Reno to U.S. 60 near Vinita will be redesignated as S.H. 66. This photograph was taken August 23, 1985.
