The first major contracts were awarded in 1985 for grading and drainage on the section between New Haven Avenue and Apache Street, plus a contract for five bridges along the stretch, including two at Yale Avenue, two at Coal Creek and one at Apache Street. These bridges were completed in the spring of 1987.
The second contracts were awarded in 1986 for grading and drainage between New Haven Avenue and U.S. 75 as well as building five bridges along this stretch, including a two-lane bridge over the expressway at New Haven Avenue, two long bridges over Harvard Avenue and the Santa Fe Railroad (as well as some spurs), and two at the U.S. 75 interchange. This view is looking northwest from the Apache Street bridge with the Coal Creek bridges in the distance.
The expressway is scheduled for completion in late 1988.
