Motorists passing through the 61st Street and Yale Avenue got a little wet and, in some cases, a free car wash courtesy of a broken water line at the intersection. Water spewed more than 25 feet into the air and created a river on Yale Avenue that flowed north for several blocks due to storm sewers at the intersection being out of service for construction. A lot of mud washed onto the street, and southbound motorists benefitted the most as their cars were "washed" after they hit the mud. Motorists traveling the other three directions weren't as lucky, as their cars became muddied after getting wet. The water line was repaired within a short time. In the background is Saint Francis Hospital. This photograph was taken August 18, 1983.
