The 61st Street approaches at Yale Avenue, shown looking east, will be widened to four lanes with left- and right-turn lanes, which should eliminate the dangerous conditions at the intersection. Motorists presently turn left without a left-turn arrow, and this sometimes can be risky in terms of avoiding an accident. The approaches include passing lanes that motorists can utilize to get around those making a left turn. In the background, work is under way on the first part of the 61st Street widening project between Yale Avenue and Sheridan Road, which includes the Sheridan Road intersection in the distance (at the base of the hill). The two-lane road is concrete from Yale Avenue east to just beyond the entrance to St. Francis Hospital, at which point it becomes asphalt. The 61st Street and Yale Avenue intersection, which also is funded by the 1980 sales tax, will be let under a separate contract later this year, according to reports. This photograph was taken April 15, 1983.
