A traffic switchover recently occurred on Apache Street, and the new westbound lanes are higher than the eastbound lanes. While one may think that the concrete is thicker, in reality it isn't. Rather than tearing down the pavement to dirt and building a new road, crews laid a thin layer of asphalt over the old pavement and then poured the concrete on top of that to create the new road. The expanded sections were built from the ground up, but anything built on the old pavement was built on top of it. The Yale Avenue approaches will be built from the ground up since they were two lanes from the start. Photograph taken September 25, 1987.
