The eastbound I-44 Arkansas River bridge opened October 31, 1983, and traffic has responded well to the new bridge. The westbound bridge remains two lanes, with the former eastbound lanes closed. Crews are rebuilding the inner sections of the approaches, which should be completed in early 1984. At this time, each bridge will have three lanes open. Work also is beginning on installing lights for the bridge. The metal conduit attached to the side of the bridge will carry wiring for the lights, which will be mounted on alternating piers.
