Several high-pressure machines and paint cans are the main occupants of the new eastbound I-44 Arkansas River bridge these days, as work is under way on painting the structure. Finishing touches are being applied to the bridge in preparation for opening within the next two months. This bridge's drainage system also is different from the westbound bridge. The westbound bridge has pipes that drain through the bridge deck while this bridge has slots at the bottom of the bridge railings that allow water to run off the bridge in numerous locations. Of course, these slots are not present over the roadways at either end of the bridge. Photograph taken September 10, 1983.
