The Interstate 44 Arkansas River bridge project began in November 1979 with the construction of a new bridge to the north of the original bridge. The new bridge opened in two phases, with the westbound lanes opening in April 1981 and the eastbound lanes in June 1981. The original bridge then was closed for demolition and replacement to create a twin-bridge system at the site. This view is looking south in the Arkansas River, with the new bridge towering over the old bridge. Photograph taken April 24, 1982.
