The 21st Street bridge's old deck is less than one span long, and the final section should be gone within a few days. Following removal of the old bridge deck, the machine will be lowered to the ground by a crane.
New piers are advancing across the bridge from both ends. Three piers have been completed at the west end, and a fourth pier is in forms. Footings for additional piers have been installed on top of the original bridge piers.
The pier at left (foreground) will be part of the ramp off the 21st Street bridge. The wooden timbers on the ground will be used in building the elevated bridge ramp. Photograph taken July 11, 1984.
