The most extensive portion of the 71st Street widening project, the section between Lewis and Harvard avenues, took more than two years to build and included extensive dirt work and large retaining walls.
This This photograph was shows the view looking east at 71st Street and Delaware Place. A traffic signal has been installed at Evanston Avenue. The former hills in this area were leveled out, and concrete retaining walls were built throughout this section, including in the areas of the former rock slopes.
Construction began on this section in February 1997 and was completed in the summer of 1999. This photograph was taken August 3, 2003.
