Traffic flow on 71st Street has improved in recent weeks following the installation of a left-turn lane from just west of 73rd East Avenue to Memorial Drive. The project, which was funded through the 1991 sales tax extension, widened the street by adding a lane on the south side of the street and resurfacing/restriping the street to provide two lanes and a left-turn lane. Traffic still is congested along the street, but the left-turn lane helps prevent backups. Due to a small bridge, the section beween 72nd and 69th East avenues was not widened. West of 69th East Avenue, the street widens for the Sheridan Road intersection. A project to widen the street to six lanes has not been funded, but traffic flow has improved substantially with the left-turn lane addition. Photograph taken February 9, 1992.
