Into the Sunset: As the sun sets on Phase I of the 71st Street widening project, major traffic jams are a distant memory on the section between Atlanta Avenue and the Arkansas River. Minor traffic jams may occur at the three traffic signals along the section, but they disperse upon getting the green light. In terms of traffic lanes, this roadway is Tulsa's widest street with three lanes each way and a left-turn lane. Throw in two right-turn lanes at Lewis Avenue, and you have eight lanes at that intersection. Eventually, 71st Street will be six lanes from the Arkansas River east to Garnett Road, a distance of seven miles. The next section to go to contract will be from 90th East Avenue (Woodland Hills Mall's east entrance) to the Mingo Valley Expressway interchange area, including 71st Street and Mingo Road.
