Pine Street and Peoria Avenue once was the scene of traffic problems and other issues until the 1977 bond issue provided funds to improve it. Prior to the widening project, the intersection had four lanes on each approach with left-turn lanes on Peoria Avenue only. To the east and south, the Cherokee Expressway was built in the 1970s and opened in August 1979. The project, which went to contract in 1980, involved widening and rebuilding Pine Street through the intersection area, and no-left-turn signs were posted for all four directions during the project. The southeast corner was one of the first sections paved, with the westbound lanes being the last. The project was completed in January 1981, and the intersection now is four lanes on each approach with left-turn lanes. No right-turn lanes were added. A Dairy Queen once stood on the southeast corner but now is McDonald's. Photo taken November 1985.
