Traffic flow has increased at 81st Street and Lewis Avenue following the opening of Riverside Drive to 81st Street. However, 81st Street was prepared for the traffic increase due to a project funded by the 1985 sales tax. The street was widened to four lanes with a median, and the low-water crossing at Fred Creek was replaced with a bridge. A one-lane bridge along the street was replaced with a storm sewer. The 81st Street and Lewis Avenue intersection received a new west approach containing four lanes with left- and right-turn lanes, as well as a northbound dual left-turn lane and a southbound right-turn lane. New traffic signals also were installed. Traffic flow has responded well to the improvements. Photo taken May 1988.
