Construction is scheduled to begin in 1986 on widening the 81st Street and Harvard Avenue intersection to four lanes with left- and right-turn lanes on each approach. The intersection will not be too difficult to widen, as only some minor grade realignments will be required on the hills. The hill on 81st Street east of Harvard Avenue will not be part of this project. Instead, it will be included when 81st Street someday is widened from Harvard Avenue to the east. Traffic congests heavily on 81st Street, but this has only been a problem in recent years. The city has installed temporary passing lanes on a couple of the approaches to assist motorists until the intersection is widened. The intersection was a four-way stop sign until 1976, at which time the present traffic signal was installed. There is an express southbound right-turn lane on the northwest corner.
