Seventy-First Street and Peoria Avenue has undergone a major revision in recent months, going from a 90-degree bend to a four-way intersection as a result of the new 71st Street bridge over the Arkansas River, which opened in December 1983. And, more changes are on the way courtesy of two projects funded by the 1983 bond issue. One project will widen 71st Street to six lanes from the Arkansas River bridge to just east of Lewis Avenue, while the second project will extend Riverside Drive from 61st to 81st streets, with the new road to pass through this intersection. These projects are scheduled to be built within the next few years. The area is somewhat rural at this time, but that is expected to change following completion of the projects.
