This intersection is due a major facelift in 1983. The project, which is funded by the 1980 sales tax, will widen 61st Street to four lanes with left- and right-turn lanes, with possible other improvements planned. Making a left turn from 61st Street to Yale Avenue can be challenging at times, as motorists turning left sometimes cannot see motorists passing in the extra lane, which creates near misses or accidents. Yale Avenue is four lanes with left-turn lanes, but additional improvements also may be made on it. In the background on the left is Holiday Hills Shopping Center, which includes Sipes Grocery. An old Texaco station recently was demolished on the northwest corner, and a new Texaco is being planned on the site. LaFortune Park is on the northeast corner, with Saint Francis Hospital on the southeast corner and a Gulf station on the immediate southwest corner. Warren Place, a large office complex, is being built to the southwest of the station. Photo taken July 1982.
