Traffic flow is much improved at 61st Street and Sheridan Road following completion of a widening project in 1984. The intersection was widened to four lanes with left- and right-turn lanes on each approach. Sheridan Road was widened to four lanes between 59th and 63rd streets, as was 61st Street between Yale Avenue and Sheridan Road. The intersection project shifted into high gear in the spring of 1983 with the closing of Sheridan Road at 62nd Street for an excavation and widening project on the hill. The hill reopened in the summer of 1983, and work then began on the intersection, which was completed in May 1984. With the exception of 61st Street to the west, the remaining three approaching streets are two lanes, which creates some minor congestion for motorists after they pass through the intersection. The section of Sheridan Road between 51st and 61st streets will be improved through a 1985 sales tax project, but the streets to the south and east are unfunded. Photo taken October 1985.
