This intersection was a rural site in 1974, as there was nothing more than a stop sign on 61st Street. Ten years later, things have changed considerably, as the intersection is in one of Tulsa's busiest areas. The intersection began its transofrmation in the mid 1970s when Memorial Drive was widened to four lanes in the area. A flashing signal was installed in 1975, around the time construction began on the widening project in this area. In early 1976, the permanent traffic signals were installed, including the restricted left-turn signals. However, the left-turn signals operated with the regular signals and had a solid green light in place of the arrow until May 1976, at which time the project was completed, and the left-turn signals received arrows. The intersection is four lanes on each approach with left-turn lanes. plus right-turn lanes for southbound and westbound traffic. In 1982, the intersection received the yield left-turn signal, and the right-turn arrows were eliminated for northbound and eastbound traffic. This intersection was the first along 61st Street to be improved on all four approaches. The northwest corner contains the Falls Apartments, which is a large apartment complex that rises up on a hill. Several office buildings are located on the southwest corner. Photo taken June 1985.
