Sixty-First Street and Harvard Avenue will see relief in the late 1980s through a widening project funded by the 1985 sales tax. The project will widen 61st Street to four lanes between Harvard and Sandusky avenues and improve the 61st Street and Harvard Avenue intersection, which has several hazardous features. Besides being difficult for left turns, Harvard Avenue's southbound right lane ends in a ditch on the south side of 61st Street, which creates difficulties for motorists traveling south on Harvard Avenue. The widening project will eliminate this hazard by extending the right lane through the intersection to near 62nd Street, at which point the street slowly will narrow to two lanes.
