In 1974, the 51st Street and Sheridan Road intersection was widened to four lanes with left-turn lanes on each approach and right-turn lanes for all but northbound traffic. At the time of completion, the intersection was connected by two-lane streets on three approaches and a four-lane street that needed reconstruction on the fourth. The 1977 bond issue provided funds to rebuild Sheridan Road between 42nd and 50th streets and to widen 51st Street to four lanes between Marion Avenue (east of Harvard Avenue) and Memorial Drive. The 51st Street project was completed in the Sheridan Road area in 1980, followed by the Sheridan Road project in 1983. The section of Sheridan Road between 51st and 61st streets is unfunded, so that section will remain two lanes for now. Traffic flow has improved at the intersection following completion of the aforementioned projects, and the eventual widening of Sheridan Road to the south should eliminate other problems. A large TG&Y store is located on the northwest corner, with The Farm shopping center on the southeast corner. Button's Video Store is located on Sheridan Road just south of this intersection.
