Several conversions occurred at 51st Street and Harvard Avenue in 2002, including new traffic signals and the removal of some medians from all but the north approach. The medians closest to the intersection were removed, while the remaining medians were left intact. The traffic signal conversion included the poles, mast arms and signals, and right-turn arrows were installed for eastbound traffic. The other configurations were unchanged, although the five-head left-turn signal replaced the four-head signal that had been at the intersection since 1982. No work has occurred in relation to the I-44 widening, but right of way is being acquired for the project. The Woodland West shopping center on the north side of 51st Street, east of Harvard Avenue, will be removed for the new highway, and businesses are vacating the facility. Several buildings along 51st Street between Lewis and Harvard avenues are being vacated, which indicates that the highway will be expanded to the south in this area. Photo taken October 2007.
