A minor widening project occurred at 46th Street and Sheridan Road as part of a 1991 sales tax project to add a center left-turn lane to Sheridan Road between 41st and 51st streets. The intersection originally was widened for a southbound left-turn lane through a 1977 bond issue project. The 1991 project, which began in 1995 and was completed in 1996, added a northbound left turn lane at 46th Street and removed the southbound left-turn median, thus creating a continuous center left-turn lane for the one mile section. A half lane was added to each side of Sheridan Road, and the street then was restriped to a five-lane configuration. The storm sewers that were installed through the 1977 bond issue project were built far enough away from the street to allow for a fifth lane to be added without installing new lines. However, the inlet boxes had to be modified. Photo taken June 1987.
