Until early fall 1974, the 46th Street and Memorial Drive intersection had a cable-strung traffic signal that spanned a two-lane street. At that time, the signal was replaced with the present traffic signals, including the restricted left-turn signal with a solid green lens in place of the arrow, as part of the Memorial Drive widening project between 41st and 71st streets. This section of the widening project was completed in early 1976, and the left-turn signals were put into operation at that time. The restricted system remained in place until June 1982, at which time the yield system was installed, and the right-turn arrows were deleted.
