The 31st Street and Yale Avenue intersection is shadowed to the north and east by the Broken Arrow Expressway, which creates shortened turn lanes on these approaches due to the proximity of the bridges. The intersection has left-turn lanes on each approach and right-turn lanes for all but southbound traffic, even though there are right-turn arrows for that direction. The traffic signals are an unusual design, as there are two "regular" signals on the mast arms and a separate right-turn signal on the pole for the three directions with right-turn lanes. Prior to the green-arrow conversion in 1980, the signal on the pole contained a red light with green and yellow right-turn arrows. The left-turn signals were converted to the yield system in early 1982. Construction soon will be occurring above the intersection, as the Oklahoma Department of Transportation is planning to redeck the three bridges on the Broken Arrow Expressway. This project is scheduled to begin later this year and be completed in 1986. The Tulsa Message Center also is located at this intersection. Photo taken July 1985.
