The 31st Street and Memorial Drive intersection is scheduled to receive several improvements in the mid 1980s that will alleviate traffic congestion. The project, which is funded by the 1980 sales tax, will include adding right-turn lanes for eastbound, westbound and northbound traffic (southbound already has such a lane) and installing a dual left-turn lane for eastbound traffic. The present left-turn lane often backs up beyond I-44, which creates problems because the jam extends into the left through lane on 31st Street. In the background are a couple of U.S. 66 signs, as U.S. 66 travels I-44 through Tulsa along with S.H. 33 (not signed at this intersection). The I-44 bridges in the background were among those widened and redecked in 1980. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol office is located on the northwest corner of this intersection. Photo taken July 1982.
