A major traffic bottleneck has been eliminated with the widening of Sheridan Road to five lanes between 64th and 81st streets. Traffic now has four or more lanes on Sheridan Road from Apache to 81st streets, which will help reduce the traffic jams that have plagued the street for years and offer an alternate route to Yale Avenue or Memorial Drive. The widening was completed in two phases. Work began on the section between 64th and 71st streets in 1999 and was completed in 2000. This section was built with concrete. The second phase, from 71st to 81st streets, began in 2000 and was completed in 2001. This section is asphalt with a concrete curb/gutter. A companion project on the second phase involved widening the 81st Street and Sheridan Road intersection to four lanes on each approach, as well as left- and right-turn lanes. The projects were funded by the 1991 sales tax. Photograph taken August3, 2003.
