Travel on South Lewis Avenue has been improved following construction of a new bridge over Joe Creek. The project, which began in the spring of 1993 and was completed in early 1994, consisted of replacing the four-lane bridge, which had a 15-ton load limit, with a five-lane bridge and rebuilding Lewis Avenue between the bridge and 59th Street. Prior to the project, the section of Lewis Avenue did not have curbs or storm sewers. These were installed as part of the project. The old bridge had three spans with steel girders and two piers in Joe Creek. The new bridge is a single-span structure with concrete girders and a sidewalk protected by a small conrete bridge railing on the street side and a decorative railing on the exterior.
