Flooding problems on South Harvard Avenue have been "buried" in the form of the South Fork of Little Joe Creek. The creek still exists in the area, but it has been buried in a three-box culvert through the area. The creek once passed through a small bridge just north of 56th Street and then ran parallel to Harvard Avenue, creating a natural barrier between the street and Grimes Elementary School. The creek then turned northwest and went through a wooded area before emptying into Joe Creek. Now, the creek enters the box structure east of Harvard Avenue and travels on a northwest trajectory under Harvard Avenue to the area beyond the small trees on the left, where the structure ends. The project included improving the drainage system on Harvard Avenue between 56th and 61st streets, including storm sewer installation and some reconstruction. The new roadway has small shoulders but no curbs and was resurfaced in some areas. The project, which was funded by the 1992 bond issue, was completed in 1994. Photograph taken May 18, 1995
