Crews first removed the old Joe Creek bridge to the piers and now are working on removing the pier caps, which only will leave the columns from the original bridge. A new pier cap then will be poured that will utilize the new third column and connect to the pier cap on the eastbound portion of the bridge, which then will create a solid pier cap the width of the entire bridge. At this time, the pier cap has been removed from the west pier, and a form is being installed to pour the new pier cap, while part of the old pier cap still remains on the east pier. The abutment walls also are being expanded to accommodate the wider piers. Photograph taken February 16, 1985.
