The Boston Avenue bridge over the Burlington Northern Railroad carried its last vehicle end to end in late spring 1976. At that time, the bridge was closed to traffic on a permanent basis except for the portion on the south end that connected to the Williams Center parking garage. According to reports, the Boston Avenue bridge's trouble spot is at the north end, where the retaining wall has deteriorated to an extent that the span could collapse. Pedestrians are allowed to walk across the bridge to the stariway at left, but they are not allowed from that point north to Archer Street. That area of the bridge also suffered some damage from the fire in 1979 that resulted in the closing of the Cincinnati Avenue bridge one block east. This view shows the bridge looking east from the Main Street bridge, which will be opening in the near future. The damaged span is partially visible at left. Photograph taken April 22, 1982.
