Eighty-First Street has been widened to five lanes between Memorial Drive and Mingo Road. Construction began in late 2009 and was completed in December 2010. The project widened the street to five lanes and installed curbs, storm sewers and sidewalks. The new street is asphalt with a concrete curb and gutter. The east approach at 81st Street and Memorial Drive was rebuilt with concrete and now has four through lanes and a left-turn lane. No right-turn lane was built. The completion of this project now leaves only three miles of 81st Street (Harvard Avenue to Memorial Drive) to be widened, although the street is three lanes between Yale Avenue and Sheridan Road. No funding is available for improving the remaining sections. Photograph taken December19, 2010
