A major traffic jam has become history in south Tulsa following the widening of 61st Street to five lanes between 85th East Avenue and the Mingo Valley Expressway. The project, which began in the summer of 1995 and was completed in late 1996, involved widening the street to five lanes, including the 61st Street approaches at Mingo Road, which received left- and right-turn lanes in addition to the four through lanes. Mingo Road received temporary asphalt approaches with one lane each direction and left - and right-turn lanes. The Mingo Road approaches will be widened and rebuilt with concrete as part of a future Mingo Road widening project between 51st and 71st streets. The project included adding a northbound right-turn lane at 61st Street and Memorial Drive. Photograph taken June 19, 1997.
