Traffic flow is much improved on 51st Street following completion of widening the street between Memorial Drive and 94th East Avenue. The project, which was funded by the 1991 sales tax, widened the street to five lanes between 94th and 89th East avenues, at which point the street narrows to four lanes for the remainder of the way to Memorial Drive. Construction began in January 1992 and was completed in the summer of 1992. The street was closed during part of the construction. The completion of this section, shown looking east from the hill at Memorial Drive, makes 51st Street four or more lanes from Lewis Avenue to Garnett Road. It is the only east-west street south of 31st Street that has continuous multiple lanes for that distance. Photograph taken May 17, 1993.
