Relief is on the way for the 51st Street and Mingo Road intersection, as Tulsa voters approved a bond issue in May 1983 that will fund a project to widen the overloaded intersection. This view shows heavy congestion on 51st Street, and the northbound lane of Mingo Road also is congested. The intersection will be widened to four lanes with left- and right-turn lanes on each approach. The bond issue project includes widening 51st Street to five lanes between Mingo Road and the Mingo Valley Expressway. A separate project funded by the 1985 sales tax will widen Mingo Road to five lanes between 43rd and 51st streets. No contracts have been awarded, and there have been no reports indicating when this will occur. The intersection received a new traffic signal in 1985, but the left-turn restriction remains in effect from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays. Photograph taken April 1986.
