This intersection was the last project to be built from the 1977 bond issue. The old intersection, which had a cable-strung light, was two lanes on all four approaches and had narrow bridges on Mingo Road north of 31st Street and on 31st Street east of Mingo Road. The 1977 bond issue provided funds to widen the intersection to four lanes with a left-turn lane on each approach and to widen 31st Street to four lanes between Mingo Creek (just west of Mingo Road) and the Mingo Valley Expressway. The two bridges also were replaced. Construction began in the fall of 1982 and was completed in the summer of 1983. A companion project, which was funded by the 1980 sales tax and built at the same time, widened 31st Street to four lanes between Mingo Creek and Memorial Drive. This project was completed in the fall of 1983. The Mingo Creek bridge on 31st Street is the only section that wasn't rebuilt in either project. Photograph taken July 1986.
