The 31st Street and Garnett Road intersection received northbound and westbound right-turn lanes, along with new traffic signals, as part of a two-phase Garnett Road widening project that was completed in 1999. Garnett Road was widened to five lanes between 21st and 41st streets under two separate projects that were built between 1997 and 1999. These projects improved Garnett Road's traffic flow through the intersection, as motorists no longer merge into one lane either side of the intersection. The project also included removing the four left-turn medians that were installed during the original widening project in 1979-80. The section of 31st Street between Garnett Road and 129th East Avenue, background, is the lone unimproved roadway approaching the intersection. That section is on the capital improvements list but unfunded. Several businesses have changed names since 1986, including Taste of China now occupying the former Meeting Place Restaurant and Albertson's replacing Skaggs Alpha Beta. Photograph taken May 1999.
