Minor modifications were made at 21st Street and Garnett Road as part of a widening project on Garnett Road between 21st and 31st streets. The intersection received a northbound right-turn lane, along with new traffic signals, in 1998, which made for an easier drive for northbound motorists wanting to travel east on 21st Street to Eastland Mall. These improvements were the intersection's first since it originally was widened in 1975. The section of Garnett Road between I-44 and 21st Street, shown in the distance, is funded and should be widened within the next few years. The completion of that project will make all approaching streets four or more lanes. Photograph taken May 1999.
