Traffic flow improved at 11th Street and Garnett Road following installation of left-turn signals on Garnett Road in 1983. No widening occurred for the installation, as the pavement was wide enough to accommodate the lanes and simply was restriped. There are no funded improvements at this time, but the Garnett Road approaches likely will be rebuilt when I-44 is widened through the area in the 1990s. Until the green arrow elimination in 1980, the intersection had green arrows for 11th Street (straight on center signal and straight-right on the right signal - but no yellow arrow). A second conversion occurred in 1981 with the left-turn signal conversion on 11th Street and right-turn arrow elimination on Garnett Road in 1981. The intersection has several motels, and a Howard Johnson's motel and restaurant once were located along I-44 near the intersection. The small I-44 sign on the median for westbound traffic indicates a detour for accessing I-44, as the 11th Street entrance ramp to westbound I-44 is closed. Traffic must follow 11th Street to the Mingo Valley Expressway (U.S. 169) and then follow it south to access westbound I-44. This detour will remain in effect until the ramps are reconfigured as part of the I-44 widening project. Photograph taken May 1988.
